About Darren: "Having been inspired to explore a career in nature photography by my father's travels in Antarctica, Darren now pursues a passion for capturing and sharing the wonder of the natural world.
After graduating from the Queensland College of Art, he first worked in commercial photography, before taking up a position as photographer with the Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service, where he worked for 8 years.
He moved on from that part of his career in 1994 and his work is now published widely in books, magazines and paper products. He has had the opportunity to photograph extensively across Australia and in Africa, Alaska, Patagonia, Tonga and Antarctica and have introduced many people to the world's great wildlife and landscape destinations first hand, through small group photography tours, predominantly to Africa and Antarctica."

Darren guided our photography groups in Tonga during 2001, 2002, 2008 and 2009 seasons. We are very happy to have him join our Whaleswim Team again to guide our photography tours in Tonga 2010.

Over the past 10 season we have had many wildlife photography enthusiasts as well as professional wildlfe photographers join these special tours. Professional photographers such as Francois Gohier (joined us for 2 seasons), Scott Portelli (worked with us as one of our guides for 6 seasons until 2007), Mike Hill, Kelvin Aitken have joined us and got amazing images over the years.

With just a small group of 5 guests - the opporunity to be in the water with the whales is greater than the other tours we offer. This is very important for photography enthusiasts. The 'swim with whales' guidelines in Tonga allows 4 people and a guide in the water at one time with the whales. This allows 1 guest to be topside for surface shots. The group is rotated each time to allow lots of time in the water with the whales!
Our boat 'Dream Catcher' is perfect for a small group! It is 7m (24 ft) long, has 2 x 115 outboards that give it great speed when necessary. It has comfortable seating, a toilet, a huge dry area for cameras gear etc and easy access into the water. See photos below.
